Everything could have gone wrong again during hardening. During the hardening process, gas nitriding, deformation can occur due to hardening distortion. Rapid quenching during hardening leads to internal stresses due to the uneven cooling of the workpiece, which are externally recognizable as changes in dimensional and shape accuracy. These changes are called hardening distortion. This can be avoided by adapting or using a correspondingly optimized alloy – or at least reducing it to an acceptable level. In hardening, this is achieved in particular by reducing the cooling rate, for example by using an oil or salt bath for quenching instead of a water bath.
